Sunday's Writing Tips

I have decided to dedicate some posts to helping other people learn the craft of writing.  I write fiction, medieval fantasy, to be specific, but most of what I have to say will apply to non-fiction writers as well.  Being a writer of fantasy fiction, I spend a lot of time in my head, daydreaming.  This can also be considered procrastination, and that is what I'm going to talk about today.

Writers in general do a lot of thinking, and this is a good thing.  To be a successful writers though, whether fantasy, thriller, or non-fiction, we have to write.  Not only do we have to write, but other people outside our circle of friends and family have to read our work.  So, the number one rule of being a successful writer is to write.  Write every day possible and do it until your story is complete.  Writing, like any other action, improves with practice.  To be a good writer, you must write a lot, and to be a successful writer, you must be good.

We all have our reasons not to write.  You aren't alone in this.  These reasons are justifications for our fear of failure, our self doubt, our lack of motivation, and our low self esteem.  None of these reasons are good enough to keep you from writing your bestseller.  You need to write, even if you think it will be bad.  The thing is, bad writing can be made good through editing.  If you don't write at all, there is nothing to improve upon.  Nothing can't get better, because it isn't there, it doesn't exist.  I understand how hard it is to break down the mental barriers that we build up.  I understand, but I know that only you can break them, and that is exactly what you have to do.  The good news is that you can.  It's a very difficult thing to do, but it's also the easiest thing in the world.

The writing classes, the fantasy story-crafting groups, and the creative writing lessons aren't going to help you.  Writing will help you, and that is the only thing that will.  In my opinion, all of these classes and courses, and I have taken my share, are just another form of procrastination.  We are writers and we need to write.

So, today, I want you to take an hour and write.  Write anything.  Write your fantasy.  Write the prologue to the fiction novel that has been growing mold in your brain for the last 10 years.  You can do it, and once you do, the door will be thrown wide open.  Your life will change.  Start writing, and don't ever stop.  There are lots of friendly people on Twitter and Facebook who are writers.  Come join our community and share your story with the world.

My Twitter handle is @murickansaga, and if you write your first words after reading this, please find me and tell me about it.  I would love to read it and give you some critique.  Have a wonderful day, and WRITE!

Chapter Nine

I wrote chapter 9 in the last two days.  The thing I love about this style of writing, is that I find out the story as I go along, almost as if I'm reading it instead of writing it.  It's hard to believe, I know that it was hard for me to believe before I started writing, but you get surprised by the things that characters do and say while you are writing.  It's an unexplainable, but very enjoyable, part of the writing process.

Chapter Eight Finished

I wrapped up chapter 8 this morning.  It turned out to be a long chapter.  I have some good ideas for the next few chapters.  I get ideas as I'm falling asleep at night.  I go to sleep around 6:30 or 7:00.  I have the main idea for the book when I start it, but the smaller chapter plots come to me as I progress.  I feel like the whole story is going on in my head, and I just pick out the interesting parts to tell the reader.  Each character has a life of their own, but not all of them can be told.  Who cares about the innkeeper's sore feet?  I try to get to the heart of the matter, and only tell what is needed to advance the story.

Chapter Eight

I got a late start this morning, so I couldn't complete chapter 8.  I had to fix the lights on my trailer, and clean the leaves off of the roof of the house.  I plan on finishing the chapter before the end of the day.  My wife gave me some valuable input for chapter seven, so I went back and added some pertinent information.  She reads each chapter as I write it, and helps me when I need it.  She is literally my inspiration for this series.  Last year I was telling her about my idea for a story and she convinced me to start writing it.  In a way, I am lucky, because I have one fan to write for.  Even if I don't sell a single book, I still have a reason to write.

Chapter Seven

I woke up early this morning and had enough time to write chapter seven completely.  I'm off today and tomorrow, so I hope to get more written than I normally do.

Chapter Six Finished

I wrapped up Chapter Six this morning.  This has been a tough week.  I have been tearing down, and rebuilding a brick mailbox.  Masonry is hard work, and I'm exhausted.  I didn't get much sleep last night, for some reason.  I'm happy with the chapter though, I like the way it turned out.  My wife April inspired me to write, but Stephen King's book "On Writing" opened my eyes and showed me how to do it.  Those two things happened at the same time, and without them, I wouldn't be doing this.

Chapter Six Continued.

I almost finished chapter six today.  I could end it where it is, but there's more I want to say.  The funny part is that I don't know what I want to say yet.  lol  I just know that there is more, and it's inside me, I just have to find it.  I have been thinking about this chapter for a while now, so it felt good to get it down.  It's weird to have something bouncing around in your head, then completely disappear once you have written it down.  There's probably a name for this phenomena in some dusty psychological tome somewhere.

Chapter Six

I began chapter six today.  We'll see how our Plainsmen stand up to the ferocious kingsmen.  At my wife's request, I have started a new page on this blog to tell some of the backstory.  She wants to know more about Levin's father, so I will start there.  Also, to any writers who read this blog, I would be happy to share any information with you, so feel free to ask.  Writing is so much fun, and I would like to help anyone who needs it.

Audible Version

I have found the narrator for the Audible version of The Dead Squire, and hopefully the entire series.  The narration will be finished by mid August, and I am really excited about it.  The timing coincides with the publication of the second book.  The series is shaping up to be all I imagined.  Also, on this blog, or possibly another, depending on the technical aspects, I will be writing some backstory exclusively for the fans and supporters of the blog.  Stay tuned!

Cover Reveal for Book Two, The Dead Knight

James at GoOnWrite is great.  I can't recommend him to self publishing authors highly enough.  The second book is coming along nicely.  I woke up late today, and didn't have time to write, but I need to take a day off once in awhile anyway.  I'm hoping to be finished with it by early summer, and have it published by August.

First Copy

Here is the first ever physical copy of my novel, The Dead Squire.  I am very proud of it, as I'm sure most authors are.  It's not flying off of shelves, but my heart and soul are between those covers.  The thing that I have realized is that everything has it's audience, we just need to have the patience and perseverance to hang in their until we find ours.  I have fallen in love with movies and books that are critically and commercially panned, while I have hated critical and commercial "darlings."  I'm just hoping to find my audience before it's too late.  I don't want to become a bestseller 40 years after I'm dead.

Chapter 5 Continued.

I finished chapter 5 today.  I'm happy with the way it turned out.  I'm not 100% sure yet, but I think that this book might be a bit longer than the first one.  I would actually like to keep writing today, I feel like I'm in a groove, but I need to go to work.  I have to rip out a crooked brick mailbox, and rebuild it straight.  I purchased the cover for The Dead Knight.  Hopefully I'll get it today, and be able to post it tomorrow morning.

Chapter 5

I got a decent start on Chapter 5 today.  I am delving into Delia's character and figuring out what makes her tick.  She is pretty much a blank slate at this point in the story, and I'm feeling the need to flesh her out.

DIY

I made this shelf for my wife April.  She collects stones and I like to build stuff.

Chapter 4

I finished chapter four this morning, and got a slight start on chapter five.  Surprisingly, I'm enjoying this book as much or more than I did the first one.  Chapter four has a darker theme, but it was fun to write.  It's fun to try to figure out what someone else might do or why they would do it.

Friday, March 11, 2022

Today I started writing chapter 4 of The Dead Knight.  The book is coming along well, and I am excited about it.  At this point in my life, I have a few hours every morning to write.  I'm working to get to the point where I can write full time.  When this happens, I'm sure that the books will come more frequently.  The story is in my head, I just have to find the time to put it down and publish it.

The Dead Squire is book one of The Murickan Saga.

You can buy it here.

Book two, The Dead Knight, is well underway, and should be published by the end of the summer.

Criticism
